Lesson Plan: Black Consciousness for Early Childhood Education

Goals

Estimated time: 10 – 15 minutes

Main objectives:

  • Promote respect for ethnic-racial diversity from childhood, highlighting the importance of Afro-Brazilian culture in the formation of Brazilian society.
  • Encourage reflection on the history and contribution of black people in building the country.
  • Develop children's critical awareness of racism and discrimination.

Secondary objectives:

  • Stimulate children's creativity in the production of artistic materials in honor of Afro-Brazilian culture.
  • Foster mutual respect and appreciation of differences between colleagues.
  • Encourage solidarity and collaboration among students in carrying out the proposed activities.

Introduction

Time estimate: 15 – 20 minutes

After a brief conversation about the meaning of Black Consciousness, the teacher will read a book children that addresses the theme, such as “Menina Bonita do Laço de Fita”, by Ana Maria Machado. Afterwards, a short video will be shown about the importance of Black Consciousness, adapted for children. Students will be asked questions about what they understood from the story and video, to ensure they understand the topic.

Time estimate: 50 – 60 minutes

Activities

Review of previous knowledge

Estimated time: 10 – 15 minutes

The teacher will ask students questions about the story read and the video watched, reinforcing the concepts of respect for diversity and appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Artistic production

Time estimate: 20 – 25 minutes

Children will be divided into groups and will have materials available to produce symbols of Afro-Brazilian culture, such as African masks, colorful bead necklaces or paintings representing ethnic-racial diversity. During the activity, the teacher will stimulate creativity and value the originality of the productions.

Conversation circle

Time estimate: 15 – 20 minutes

After artistic production, the groups will present their work to the class, explaining what they produced and why they chose that symbol. The teacher will facilitate a conversation about the importance of valuing Afro-Brazilian culture and the fight against racism, encouraging empathy and respect among students.

Time estimate: 15 – 20 minutes

Learning Check

Time estimate: 5 – 10 minutes

Students will be asked questions about what they learned during class, such as the importance of Black Consciousness, the meaning of Afro-Brazilian culture and how we can combat racism. Students will also be encouraged to share their experiences during the activities carried out.

Student feedback

Time estimate: 5 – 10 minutes

Students will be invited to express what they liked most about the class, what they learned new and if they have any questions or suggestions for future activities.

Homework

Time estimate: 5 minutes

The teacher will suggest that children talk to their families about the importance of Black Consciousness and research at home about black personalities who contributed significantly to society.

Conclusion

Estimated time: 10 – 15 minutes

The class will end with a circle time, where students can share what they most enjoyed learning and producing during the activities. The teacher will reinforce the importance of respecting diversity and valuing all cultures, promoting an inclusive and welcoming school environment for everyone. The role of each person in the fight against racism and in building a more just and egalitarian society will be highlighted.
